147 Deli

I've been living on the Northside of Dublin City Centre for a while now and for a long time thought we  badly lacked of inexpensive places serving good casual grub. Thankfully it has improved considerably over the last year or two and now even southsiders have reason to cross the Liffey to try cool eateries such as Brother Hubbard or Oxmantown. Well folks, there's a new kid on the block and he's called 147 Deli.

The interior is modern and funky with a giant black, white and yellow map of Dublin on the wall, colourful high chairs and a little counter top. If you want to make yourself more comfortable you'll find tables at the back with nice cushions to rest your little back against the wall. The music in the background was funky too and there was definitely a New York vibe going on in the middle of... Dublin's Chinatown.

The staff make the sandwiches in front of you and there are also some sweet treats on display at the deli counter, as well as their full Irish breakfast quiches. They also make soups and salads if you're in search of healthier options.

The sandwich menu is written on a chalk board, 6 different options (meaty, cheese, veggie and fish)  made with bread from Arun Bakery.

I visited on a freezing cold day and during my speedy lunch break, needed something comforting and warming. I know a soup would have been a bit more reasonable but l liked the sound of their sambo special: 'roast loin of pork with crackling, apple and celeriac slaw and onion and thyme puree on an onion bap'. Are you tempted too?

I was brought the sambo on a platter with some rocket on the side. 'Crackling' yes there was fatty, crispy crackling in my sambo, I can't resist crackling.

I knew it'd be a little messy to eat as the apple and celeriac slaw was bursting out the sides of the warm bap.

The pork meat was tender and juicy, the slaw well seasoned and the apple puree brought in some sweetness that complemented the meat very well.

The oniony bap was gold and crusty outside, with the inside like a soft little pillow for the sandwich filling: a great little sandwich it was!

Friendly staff and tasty options make 147 Deli worth a visit. It looks like the Northside is becoming a nest for tasty sambo joints, long may it last.

Blog Update

I've returned to 147 Deli since my article and tried:

Their 2 cheese and meatball sub, which consists of Provalone cheese, meatballs and tomato sauce topped with rocket and parmesan. It's substantial, cheesy and very tasty

I'd also recommend the BBQ pork sambo which is great if you'd like something a little spicy.
